Play nice
What Happened:   Every year I made a New Year's resolution. I'm going to lose 20 pounds. I'm going to learn Italian, or learn to play the banjo. I never kept on resolution. Sometimes they did not last even one day.

But 15 years ago I found the perfect solution.

Lesson Learned:    In 1997 my New Year resolution was to never make another New Year resolution.

Details:   I have a perfect record ever since.

Life In The Fast Lane
What Happened:   I started bartending my senior year in college. After I graduated, I could not find a job, so I moved to a speed bar where there were more people, better tips and a lot more action. Late one night, after drinking with one of our better customers, one of the waitresses took me into the bathroom and gave a line of coke, my first ever. I went back to work and had a couple more drinks and then a couple more lines. I remember closing, but after that things are a little fuzzy.
I still have the tatoo, the penicillin cured the other problem, and the waitress avoided me until she quit several month later.

Lesson Learned:    I'm not sure what the lesson is...

Moderation in excess?

What Happened:   A friend and I went to Puerto Rico on vacation and continuously got lost because signage was so poor. Missed a lot of sights because of this-never mind the rest of the trip, which was a disaster. At the end of the trip, we found out that the signs were all pointing in the other direction.

Lesson Learned:    Never drive clockwise around Puerto Rico.

Email
What Happened:   I know this has never happened to any of you, but I once got this email that was totally outrageous, but somehow enticing. So I answered it.
Where ever it went, they sold my name and email address to probably hundreds of sleazy companies. I get 20 to 30 emails a day offering Las Vegas vacations, viagra, breast enlargement etc.

Lesson Learned:    Don't EVER respond to and email unless you know who it is from. The marketplace is full of dishonest people looking for some fool.

Friendship
What Happened:   My church uses their front lobby as a coffee house. People drop in all day and order some coffee drink and often use the wifi to get on their computers. On guy, he almost looked homeless, used to come in every day. He would order a drink and read (yes, a book) for hours. He rarely talked to anyone, but never was a bother.
We heard he passed away, and then found out from his lawyer that he had left a sizable contribution to the church.

Lesson Learned:    Never judge anybody by how they look.

Details:   I guess we were as close as he got to having friends, and all we did was pretty much ignore him.

Dating
What Happened:   I was on the second date with the man who would eventually become my husband. At an Italian restaurant, he asked if I wanted to share a salad. I said 'Get your own salad.

Lesson Learned:    Sometime the innocuous things come back to bite you in the a**.

Details:   The reason I did not want to share a salad was I did not want to be beholding to him in any way. After all, it was only our second date. At our wedding, the minister shared the story with all our friends and now my husband throws it up to me every time I ask if we can share something.

Home
What Happened:   When we bought our house 10 years ago, we purchased the repair insurance. Most people recommend doing that. Sure enough, in six months the hot water heater broke. When I tried to collect from the insurance company, they denied because the hot water heater was not part of the house, it was an appliance in the house.

Lesson Learned:    Don't listen to common knowledge. There is a reason it is common.

Details:   Go for the extraordinary knowledge.

Phone
What Happened:   Since the only people who called our home phone were unsolicited salesmen, we cancelled the service to our land line and told all our friends to call us on our cell.

Lesson Learned:    That number is used as an identifier for our AT&T U verse account. It's not our number any more. We're in trouble if someone esle gets that number and sets up a AT&T account

What Happened:   I got caught up the the frenzy over Netflix changing their pricing structure. So I canceled my account with them.

Lesson Learned:    Later I realized that I rarely streamed videos anyway, and was not really missing that feature. I signed back up and wound up paying less than I was before.

Details:   It was embarressed because I thought someone at Netflix would see what I had done.

What Happened:   My extended family flew to Hawaii to celebrate my fathers 70th birthday. The airline lost one bag and did not find it for four days.

Lesson Learned:    Always take at least a change of clothes and your toiletries as a carry on. It the majority of your stuff gets lost, you at least have backup.

Details:   My brother-in-law had to borrow clothes from the rest of us until his bag was found and returned. He looked pretty silly in some of those outfits.

What Happened:   What Happened: When I was in the Army we got a brand new 2nd lieutenant assigned to the company. When he first spoke, his accent sounded like he was off the set of Beverly Hillbillies. I mean, this guy was from so far back in the woods that they must have had to carry the moonshine out packed on mules. I thought, “here is another dumb a** who is going to get us all killed”.
Lesson Learned: Don’t jump to conclusions based on what people look like, or sound like.
Details: Turns out the lieutenant was a summa cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University and a Rhodes scholar. He just happened to be born and raised somewhere where the King’s English was a foreign language. He was to good guy, a good leader, and never did anything that would risk our lives.

Life In The Fast Lane
What Happened:   What Happened: I was out on weekend night and had a couple of drinks. It was crowded and as I was standing there, this guy put on his jacket and as he did the sleeve whipped around behind him and hit me in the face. I shoved the guy and cursed at him. He turned around and that’s when I looked up at him. And up and up.
Lesson Learned: Learn to dance, or learn to run.
Details: My life flashed before me and I just know that this was going to be a painful death. I started groveling like Ghadafi in front of the rebels. This guy was more tolerant and, for whatever reason, just walked away. Maybe I was too low to the ground for him to reach down and hit me.

What Happened:   What happened: Don’t do business with big banks no matter what they say or how slick their advertising is. They are all a bunch of thieves.
Lesson Learned: When my local bank was bought by a big nation bank, I kept my account because I believed what they said. Within a month I realized that what they did and what they said were not even close to being the same. Worse than politicians.
Details: I had a saving and check account with a small local bank. Because I kept $2000 minimum in the savings account, I did not have to pay any fees. They were bought by, I’ll call them, First Greed of America. They sent me a notice that they would be taking over in three months, but nothing would change. Every two weeks after that I got junk mail from them assuring us the Nothing Would Change. When First Greed finally took control and sent my monthly statement, there was a $6 ‘membership assessment’. I was assured that this was not a monthly fee, but an assessment. Next month I got another $6 membership assessment. I went down to the bank and very politely said WTF. I was not paying any fee before, but now I am and they had repeatedly said there were not going to be any changes. The teller was no help, so I talked to the manager, who was the same from before. He told me there was nothing I could do because of the new rules from the new owners. I closed both accounts.

What Happened:   What Happened: I got a call one day form a general contractor who said he was doing some work in the neighborhood, and did I need any work done on the house. Well in fact, we needed the roof repaired and some water damage to the ceiling and walls repaired. This guy came over and said if we signed a contract today, we would get a 25% discount. So we signed a contract and gave him one third of the money. Well, the guys he sent over to do the work were a bunch of incompetent, lazy, beer swilling !#$&*%. I called the contractor a number of times and got nothing but promises to fix it. But no improvements on the work. I finally threatened t call the contractors board and my lawyer. We settled the amount I stilled owed him. I got someone else to finish the work.
Lesson Learned: Don’t let anyone do work for you unless you get references first. And never, never, sign with someone who pressures you to do it now.
The Details: If the guy was a good contractor why was he cold calling people to get work. If he was good, he should have all the referrals he needs.

Battle Of The Sexes
What Happened:   What happened: Lilly and I had been living together for over a year, when one night she did not come home until the next day. She said she was up all night at a Dennys, talking to a mutual friend. I found out later she had been screwing this guy for six months. And there were probably others.
Lesson learned: Listen to what people say. It will tell you things that are important about who they really are.
The details: While we were still dating Lilly had told me a story that she though was very funny. It was, but I missed the really important part of the story, or chose to miss it. Her boy friend at the time was a musician. One day a friend of his came into town and sine the boy friend was busy, he asked Lily to entertain the friend, I think his name was Raul. Raul, Lily, and her dog jumped in the truck and went site seeing in the mountains. After a couple of hours and more than a few beers, they stopped of the side of the road, got a blanket out of the truck, and began to do it doggie style on the ground. Well, the dog saw Raul’s bare ass and he jumped Raul. They all fell over laughing. It is a funny visual, but what I missed was the Lily was a slut. She cheated on her boy friend, just like she cheated on me.

Pick up Lines
What Happened:   What Happened: I had been living with my girlfriend for about a month. She was at work and I was at home (her home) when she called and said I had to move out. Just like that. We had broken up and got back together once before. I should have been paying more attention.
Lesson Learned: Pay attention to what someone does, not what they say. She had called off our relationship once and she did it again. This time, however, I was left with no where to live.
The Details: I had met Claudia playing tennis. She was a knockout and almost six feet tall. We both felt a connection right away and started seeing each other almost every night. I would be at her apartment or she would be at mine. The sex was like nothing I had ever experienced. Then one day, with no reason, she said we were through. I moped around for a week and then one night she showed up at my place and said she had made a mistake, she wanted me and would never do that again.
A few weeks later she invited me to move into her apartment. I was still thinking about the time she left me, so I asked her at least three times, “are you SURE.” She said yes. It took me two weeks to move all my stuff, one car load at a time. I was settled in for another two weeks when she dropped the hammer on me again. She said we could get together once in a while for sex, but she lied about that too.
